Why is slate used for roofing?
Slate is a metamorphic rock with a fine-grain which has been used for roofing for many centuries – and for good reason! It is an attractive looking material, usually coming in various shades of grey from very light to dark – but you can find it in red, black, brown and purple. On top of this, slate is a very practical choice for a roof too.

What are the benefits of using slate roofing?
- Slate is durable.
When slate roofs are properly maintained, they can last an incredibly long time. They can last for decades or even centuries. This is because slate is naturally strong, repels water, and is less susceptible to frost damage than other materials.
Slate that can withstand extreme temperatures, acids/alkalis, and harsh weathering. It holds its natural colour very well, even after continuous exposure to UV light (sunlight).
- Slate looks attractive.
If you don’t want to choose between beauty and durability, then slate is a perfect choice. As well as being a hard-wearing material, it has a classic, traditional, pleasing look that can stand the test of time.
When using slate, the colour is not limited to just grey like previously mentioned. You can decide which shade/colour would be best suited to your home, and have a roof which blends in with the architecture or colour tradition of the local area.
As slates recognition as a top roofing material has been so long-standing, it is the go-to for traditional builds and historical restorations. However slate is versatile, so it can create stunning looks on more modern and innovative designs.
- Slate is Fire resistant.
Slate is a very fire-resistant material, and can actually withstand a much higher temperature than a lot of metals.
Slate is formed when layers of rock are exposed to very high heat and pressure – so it’s not surprising that it can withstand fire. This makes it naturally a great choice for roofing, as in the event of a fire, the roof is less likely to catch alight.
- Slate is an environmentally-friendly choice.
Some roofing materials need replacing every few decades, creating waste. Slate, however, has such a long life span, that you might never need to replace it, making it a sustainable solution.
Slate can also be recycled – it can be taken from one building, cleaned up, and reused for another. This is called reclaimed slate.
